Skills are a vital part to the DnD-like experience in general. They define what else your character is good at, and allow for further customization than the basics. The upcoming list of skills will be what are called Compound Skills.
The purpose of compound skills is to exemplify the utility of classes that are endowed in skills. There are large gaps between usefulness and pure 'Magic Wins All', and Compound skills are intended to be the bonus to the crowd that otherwise is not well endowed with the graces of magic.
If a Class has the Component Skills on their class list, they lose those skills in favor of a compound skill (If they wish). A compound skill acts as both skills, but cannot be utilized for different purposes in a single check. You can see the expanded list of Compound Skills on this page.
Acrobatics (Dex)
Balance + Jump + Tumble
Fairly Straightforward.
Legerdemain (Dex)
Disable Device + Open Lock
Using this skill allows for opening locks, disabling traps and the like, as well as allowing the user to sabotage mechanical devices.
Linguistics (Int)
Decipher Script + Speak Language
Every Rank in Linguistics allows for the learning of another language, up to Intelligence Modifier +1/2 Character Level. Your languages granted by a high Intelligence bonus at creation do not count against this number.
Perception (Wis)
Listen + Spot
The fluid ability of all of your senses to detect things around you. Hearing, Sight, Smell, Touch, Taste etc.
If you have at least 5 Ranks in Craft (Alchemy) and are a spellcaster, you can use Perception when you taste a potion or other concoction. Roll a Perception +1/2 Caster Level check opposed by the creators Craft (Alchemy) check or 10 + Spell Level + Int/Wis/Cha (Whichever is relevant to spellcasting). Success means you know exactly what the substance is, and if harmful gain a +5 Alchemical bonus to saves against the harmful effects.
Stealth (Dex)
Hide + Move Silently
Your ability to Hide and Silently move has been forged into one fluid motion.
Navigate (Dex)
Drive + Pilot (Replaces Ride with 4 Ranks)
Drive and Pilot assume that one knows how to drive ground based vehicles, and fly air and space baring crafts accordingly. With at least 4 Ranks in Navigate, a player may opt to use their navigate check instead of a ride check when using Horses and other beasts of burden as transportation.
Perception VS Hide
Goblin Rogue with Stealth Hides from Orc Barbarian:
Stealth Roll vs Spot roll and Listen roll.
Elf Scout with Perception tries to find a hiding Orc Fighter:
Perception vs Hide roll and Move Silently roll
In both cases, the Compound Skill is contested against two separate non-compounds rolls where it applies. When one non-compound skill bests the check, but the other fails, the play is called according to which skill failed.
Elf Scout; Perception of 19 v Orc Fighter: Hide 20 and Move Silently 5. The elf does not see the fighter, but does indeed hear the fighter as appropriate for the situation.
The DM can rule to use the Pathfinder Skill DCs or the Original 3.5 DCs for such related skills, as deemed appropriate.
