Drifters of the Stars
It has been a long time since the idea for such a setting hit me in the the head, as one could say, I was moreover lost with what I could do with it. At first DoTS was a forum only play by post role playing idea, with a vague set up and a few listed examples of races and character possibilities. Now, I have more plans with this system and hope to bring it together into something that is not only original in feeling, but fun to boot.
I'd like to continue with this preface to highlight some of the goals in mind when creating the project.
- To create a DnD Space fantasy.
- To streamline Futuristic gear with the DnD fantasy wealth system.
- To create an ever expanding universe of possibilities.
- To breathe new life into DnD 3.5 and to keep the torch up high and still burning.
- Finally, to have the chance to make it happen, and to have fun with it when it's all over.
The goals are really simple, and I'd like to think they are almost self-explaining. If any thing I find this project an exciting venture, and hope it bares fruit. But just for the sake of envisioning these goals I'll explain them with a little more detail;
To create a DnD Space fantasy
Star Wars, Gundam, Rogue Galaxy and others are excellent examples of space opera-types of media that fulfill a few things you often see in DnD. You find the characters growing from their experiences, finding out they have extraordinary talents or even powers they never knew they could have. You find the dramatic struggle against villains and their evil plots, and the inner struggles of character versus the situation. All of this relates, but I want a flush setting where the old fashioned magic and steel meets the new age of lasers and force-fields.
To streamline Futuristic gear with the DnD fantasy wealth system
When I sit down and think about the various costs of magic items and fancy trinkets, I wonder just how much it would cost for a futuristic setting using the same sort of system to buy, for example, a beam sword. When we look to d20 Future, we find ourselves stuck with their system of rolling wealth and HOPING to land on the right number. As original as it is, it becomes a pain to relate wealth DCs to cold hard cash. So, it is my goal to shift away with the ambiguity and to create a system of wealth that'll work with the flavor of the setting, items actually having a listed cost in such wealth, and the same feeling to wealth as DnD has it. That way the PCs can not only find items on their adventures, but have the possibility to find TREASURE.
To create an ever expanding universe of possibilities
In most DnD campaigns we find that we have a single world, and a single cause to find ourselves entitled to take to. But I want to expand that possibility to the fullest. I want to bring the realism of space's many bounties to life, and meld that with the flavor of the Space Opera to create a self perpetuating game. A harmony, perhaps, even if it sounds a little too optimistic. Even if this goal can't be fully reached I'd like to get as close to it as I can.
To breathe new life into DnD 3.5 and to keep the torch up high and still burning
We all have to admit, if e do the same thing enough we start to bore of it. Surely, not every one has ADHD, but even those who can fully commit to a craft would like to see it from other angles in the long run. If any thing it expands the satisfaction of the one taking to this new angle, and it hopefully spurns inspiration for the old and the new. This is my intention, I want to try a whole-fully new feeling spin to the game, and make it something our group can find new appreciation for.
Finally, to have the chance to make it happen, and to have fun with it when it's all over
Just thinking about the scale of this project, though not nearly as large as others out there in the world, might make one question why I'm so willing to give it a try. It's simple, really. If I, we, end up finishing it we get to sow the rewards of out hard labor. To make it happen, I feel, might make me feel accomplished and hopefully pushed me into new directions. Obviously, when we finish it, we'll have the entire game to play and explore the possibilities from, and hopefully have one of the greatest DnD campaigns of our lives.
A few final thoughts;
Should this project turn out to be beyond our expectations, we hope to share it with others for their enjoyment. That's the beauty of creating a setting or writing a book, like Eberron and Faeyrun before us, it can reach out to the imaginations of countless others. It is my sincerest hope that this project can become something beyond the expectations, and even if it isn't much beyond so, it will be a crowning jewel in the collection of world ideas. A monument to the effort of those who aid me in the endeavor, and an existing symbol of our human ability to dive into the realms of the abstract, the imagination.
